You should assist the tenant with the necessary information to ensure that the tenant registers as the
customer for services from the commencement of the letting in accordance with their obligations under the tenancy agreement.

Where utilities are metered, meter readings should be taken and recorded. The local authority should be informed of the date the letting commences for council tax and utility companies should be similarly advised for water, sewerage, gas and electricity, as appropriate.

It is a good idea to get tenants to counter sign a record of the utility meter readings at the start of the tenancy.
